The Flowers: Written by Alice Walker

A Major Literary Theme

The Flowers, a short story written by Alice walker, portrays a young girl’s

transaction from summer to autumn. A major literary theme that the writer

displays in the story is death. It shows how death brings an end to innocence,

and how it opens up new ideas about the world.

In this story, summer represented a peaceful, carefree season. When the

seasons changed, the carefree days were over, and new burdens were realized.

When the girl was frolicking in the fields and through the woods, picking flowers

and humming, she was innocent and unknowledgeable of the Earth outside of her

home. When she found the skeletal remains of the man, she discovered that the

world was not perfect, and she found a whole new viewpoint of the world.
